How Much to Spend on Flowers: Budget Bouquet or Statement?
How much to spend on flowers? A method by relationship stage and occasion, with live rose prices from 5 to 100 stems and a Bangkok delivery check.

Nobody can give you a correct number for how much to spend on flowers, because the right amount depends on who is receiving them, where they will sit and what you need them to say. What you can have is a method: three questions, a rule for relationship stage, a rule for occasion, and live rose prices at each size so you can check your answer against real money.
The short version is that price rarely decides whether a bouquet lands. Fit does. A bouquet that suits the person, the room and the moment beats a bigger one that does not. Below you will find what each rose tier buys, when small beats big, when the statement is the point, how to stretch a modest flower budget, and what to check before you pay.
How much to spend on flowers: a method, not a number
Start with three questions, in this order.
1. Who is receiving, and how well do you know each other? This sets your ceiling. Someone you met last week has a lower ceiling than someone you live with. A gift that outruns the relationship can make a person uncomfortable.
2. Where will the flowers go? A studio flat, a shared desk on the 22nd floor of an office tower, a bedside table, a dinner table for eight, the back seat of a taxi. Space and logistics cap the useful size long before money does.
3. What must the flowers say that the card cannot? Usually the answer is "I was thinking of you", which a small bouquet says well. Occasionally it is "this matters enormously", which is a statement. Be honest about which one you are buying.
Set the ceiling before you shop
Pick a figure you would still be content to have spent if the reply were a warm thank-you and nothing more. That figure is your real answer to how much to spend on flowers. If a polite response would sting, the bouquet is carrying more than flowers can, so go smaller and put the effort into the card and timing. Emily Post's advice on hostess gifts makes the same point: a gift should always be within your means.
Bigger is not the same as more thoughtful
Studies by Gino and Flynn, summarised by the British Psychological Society, found that recipients appreciate gifts they asked for more than surprise gifts, while givers do not expect this difference. A Stanford write-up of the same experiments says givers wrongly assume that going their own way will seem more considerate.
Those studies were about gifts in general, not flowers, so do not stretch them. The lesson is modest: a larger spend does not fix a mismatch, and knowing she loves pink, or that he hates fuss, is worth more than ten extra stems.
What the money buys at each rose tier
Roses come in red, pink, white-pink and orange, in sizes from 5 to 500 stems, and the price depends on the count, not the colour. Every figure below is the live price for a hand-tied bouquet in our matte black wrap with black mesh. Delivery is checked separately.
| Tier | Price | Reads as | Notice |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 roses | ฿1,999 | A light, easy gesture | Same day, by 9 pm |

| 15 roses | ฿2,999 | A step up, still easy to place | Same day, by 9 pm |
| 20 roses | ฿3,299 | A proper bouquet | Same day, by 9 pm |
| 30 roses | ฿3,999 | Generous | Same day, by 9 pm |
| 40 roses | ฿4,499 | Fuller than most rooms expect | Same day, by 9 pm |
| 50 roses | ฿5,999 | A statement | Same day, by 7 pm |

| 100 roses | ฿8,999 | The big one | 24 hours' notice |
Five and ten roses
The smallest size we make is five red roses. It fits a desk, a coffee table or a bedside, it is light enough to carry on the BTS, and it says "I thought of you" without asking for a reaction.
Ten red roses is where a bouquet starts to look deliberate. It suits a first or second date, a thank-you to a colleague or a friend's small celebration, and it still sits in one vase. For most "something nice, without making it a Thing" situations, ten is the answer. The full rose range has pink, white-pink and orange at the same sizes.
Twenty roses and the tiers around it
Twenty red roses is the size most people mean by "a proper bouquet". It reads as generous without needing a special reason, and it suits a partner's birthday, an anniversary or an overdue apology. It needs a vase; a tall glass pitcher works if there is none.
Fifteen, thirty and forty are for when the next size feels too small or too much; all three are same day by 9 pm Bangkok time.
Fifty and one hundred roses
Fifty red roses is a size that gets photographed. It is a statement, it wants a big vase or a bucket, and the same-day cut-off moves to 7 pm. Seventy roses need 24 hours' notice, as do one hundred red roses.
What a hundred costs on the supply side is covered in our guide to how much 100 roses cost in Bangkok. Above these, 200 roses need 48 hours and 500 roses 48 to 72 hours; those are event quantities.
The relationship-stage rule and the occasion rule
Two rules, applied in order, give you a tier without guesswork. The stage rule sets a baseline. The occasion rule moves you up or down by at most one step.
The stage rule
| Stage | Baseline |
|---|---|
| A crush, someone you have just met | 5 to 10 roses |
| Early dating | 10 roses |
| Established dating | 10 to 20 roses |
| Partner of a year or more | 20 to 40 roses |
| Long-term partner, serious milestone | 40 to 100 roses |
| Friend, family, colleague | 5 to 20 roses |
The larger the bouquet, the more private the place it should arrive and the more you should know about how the other person feels about big gestures. With a crush you know least, so you spend least. A large bouquet from someone you have only just met can make declining feel awkward; a small one leaves room for a friendly thank-you.
That is also why the first step with a crush is usually to ask, not to send. Our guide to flowers for a crush after you get her number covers asking where someone would like to receive them, and first date flowers in Bangkok covers what to hand over in person. For longer relationships, see flowers for your girlfriend by stage.
The occasion rule
- Birthday or anniversary: up one step. A 10-rose baseline becomes 20.
- Thank-you: stay put, or go down one. A huge thank-you can make the thanked person feel they now owe you something.
- Apology: do not scale with guilt. The bouquet is not a payment, and a bigger one can look like an attempt to skip the conversation. See apology flowers.
- Graduation, promotion, opening: up one step, and think about the crowd. The flowers will be carried through one. See Thai graduation flowers.
- Valentine's Day: be cautious about escalating. Everyone else is going big that day.
On that last point, Bangkok Post reports that Pak Khlong Talat, the city's best-known flower market, gets busier on Valentine's Day, with rose bouquets the best seller. An older Kasikorn Research Centre survey of 400 Bangkok residents aged 15 to 39, reported in 2015, found about 52% planned to buy flowers for the day. The sample is dated and narrow, but it shows how many people face the same choice at once. Order early, and set your ceiling before the day.
When a small bouquet beats a big one
In four situations a budget bouquet in Bangkok is the better choice, not the fallback.
The space is small
A studio condo in Ari or Thonglor has one table and often no vase. Twenty roses fit that table; seventy become a floor arrangement. At a desk in a Sathorn tower, ten roses are a pleasant surprise, while a bucket of fifty is something colleagues step around.
The person has to carry them
Flowers go home on the BTS or MRT, in a taxi, on a motorbike. If the recipient will be moving about after work, five or ten is kinder than a hundred that needs both arms.
The unexpected small gesture lands better
The Society of American Florists, a trade association, says most people name "just because" as the best reason to receive flowers and that unexpected gifts have the biggest impact. That is industry survey data from an American sample, so read it as a hint. Five roses on an ordinary Wednesday can say more than fifty on a day when everyone sends fifty. Our post on just-because flowers is built around the idea.
You can look after them
A Purdue floral-design instructor says roses stay fresh for five to seven days with daily water top-ups and a fresh change every two to three days. The RHS conditioning advice adds the basics: strip leaves below the waterline and re-cut the stems with a sharp knife. A small bouquet that gets that attention beats a large one left in a warm room. Our guide to making roses last in Bangkok heat covers the local specifics.
When not to send flowers at all
- The person has said no, or gone quiet. One gesture, then stop. More money does not turn silence into yes.
- A hospital ward you have not checked. One UK NHS trust asks visitors not to bring fresh flowers because flowers and their water can encourage bacteria and mould. Ask the ward first; see sending flowers to a Bangkok hospital.
- Someone with hay fever or allergies. The NHS lists not keeping fresh flowers in the house among its hay-fever self-care tips. If you do not know, ask.
- A private relationship, a shared office floor. Skip the big delivery in front of colleagues.
If the recipient has a cat, roses are a reasonable choice: the ASPCA lists roses as non-toxic to dogs, cats and horses.
When the statement is the point
Sometimes you want the flowers to be seen. A statement bouquet earns its price when the size carries meaning the card could not. Four situations pass that test.
A milestone with a number. A tenth anniversary, a fiftieth birthday, a degree after years of study. The stems need not match the number, and there is no universal rose-number dictionary, but a large bouquet signals "this is bigger than a normal Tuesday".
A proposal. The flowers are part of a scene; our guide to proposal flowers in Bangkok covers planning it.
A public celebration or opening. Flowers that hold a room should be sized for the room; the grand opening occasion page shows what we do for those.
A relationship that already speaks in big gestures. Then a statement is in character.
Three checks before you send 100 roses
Run three checks. If all three are yes, a hundred is not too much.
- Space. A hundred hand-tied roses need a large vase or a bucket and a corner of a room. In a 30 square metre condo, make it 50 and ask for a tidy handover.
- Handover. Will someone be there to receive it? Ordering a statement to a building with a juristic office is easier when you tell the recipient it is coming.
- Relationship. Will they read it as joy or as pressure? Three weeks in, it is pressure, however kind the intent.
A planned 50 is also a statement, at ฿5,999 against ฿8,999 for 100.
The statement does not have to be roses
If a stem count is not what you want, the Signature Collection offers designed bouquets, each with its own palette, and the build-your-own tool lets you choose the flowers and colours. Both list current prices on the page.
Stretching a budget: colour, pairing and timing
If you have a fixed flower budget and want the most from it, spend where the effect is largest.
Colour
At a given size, our roses cost the same in every colour, so colour is a free choice. Choose it for the person and the room, not the price. One colour in one bouquet reads as intention. Our guide to red vs pink roses helps you settle it, and bouquet colour combinations goes further.
In a peer-reviewed experiment with 158 participants, colour mattered more than petal type for stress recovery after viewing flower pictures. They viewed pictures, not bouquets, so it cannot tell you which colour to buy, only that colour deserves a moment's thought.
Pairing
A smaller bouquet with one well-chosen companion often beats a larger bouquet alone. The cheapest companion is the card: the Society of American Florists' gift tips say to make the gift stand out with a card message that has special meaning. Every gift on our site comes with flowers, and the cake and sweets range pairs bouquets with cakes, chocolate and more; prices are on each page.
Timing
The same SAF tips suggest sending flowers in the middle of an ordinary week, and a Wednesday-evening bouquet has less competition for attention than one on a crowded weekend. Avoid peak dates unless the date is the point.
The market route
If you have time, you can buy at Pak Khlong Talat yourself. The Tourism Authority of Thailand describes it as the city's biggest wholesale and retail fresh flower market, open 24 hours, liveliest after midnight and reachable from Sanam Chai MRT station. Thai PBS World describes bouquets sold at wholesale prices there.
That route can be cheaper in cash but costs time, an eye for good stems and the skill to tie a bouquet, and you still have to deliver it. If you enjoy the trip, read our guide to how to tell if roses are fresh first. If the evening matters more, order.
Compare like with like
Our guide to cheap vs premium flowers in Bangkok explains what extra money buys, and why flower prices vary lists what to ask when two quotes differ. If you cannot decide on a size, the Mystery Box lets the florist choose; the page has the current price. For regular flowers rather than one-offs, see the subscriptions page.
Delivery and the total: what to check
The bouquet price is not the whole total. Check these before you commit.
- The total, in writing. Ask in chat for the full amount: bouquet, delivery to your address and any add-on. Read the delivery page for how delivery is charged and which areas it covers.
- Notice. Same day for bouquets up to 40 roses ordered by 9 pm Bangkok time; 50 roses by 7 pm; 70 and 100 roses need 24 hours' notice; 200 roses 48 hours; 500 roses 48 to 72 hours.
- No exact arrival time. We do not promise a clock-time arrival, so do not build a surprise that depends on a particular minute. Plan around a part of the day.
- A complete address. For a condo, give the building name, tower, floor and unit, and say whether the juristic office will accept deliveries. For an office tower, name the reception desk. Our guide to sending flowers to a Bangkok condo covers the details.
- A person to receive. Tell the recipient to expect something, unless the surprise is the point and the address is one they have already given you.
- The card text. Write it before you order, not at checkout.

A worked budget table with price tokens
Three invented situations show the method in use; the table after them turns the flower budget into rows you can scan.
Example 1: a crush in Ari
You have exchanged messages with someone from a friend's birthday and have their number, but no address. The stage rule says 5 to 10 roses. The consent rule says ask first: "Can I send you something small? Where would you like it?" If they name a coffee shop, hand over 10 red roses at ฿2,399, or five at ฿1,999 if that feels lighter. Card: "Thanks for Saturday. This is for the Ari coffee we talked about." If the reply is cool, stop there.
Example 2: a third anniversary in Sathorn
The stage is a long partner and the occasion is an anniversary, so the 20-to-40 baseline goes up one step. You pick 40 pink roses at ฿4,499, ordered before 9 pm the day before. You check that the vase is tall enough and that the juristic office will take the delivery. Card: "Three years. Friday at the place on Soi 55 again?" The restraint is in the card, not the count.
Example 3: an apology, no statement
You missed a close friend's birthday dinner in Thonglor. The occasion rule says not to scale with guilt, so you send 20 pink roses at ฿3,299 the next afternoon with a card: "I got the date wrong and I am sorry. Dinner is on me, any night you choose."
The table
| Situation | Stage and occasion | Pick | Price | Card idea |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crush, address unknown | Just met | 5 roses, handed over | ฿1,999 | "A small thank-you for the good evening." |
| First or second date | Early dating | 10 roses | ฿2,399 | "I enjoyed tonight. These are for the walk home." |
| Partner's birthday | Partner, up one step | 20 roses | ฿3,299 | "Happy birthday. Table booked for Friday." |
| Thank-you to a colleague | Colleague | 5 to 10 roses | ฿2,399 | "The Friday deck would not exist without you." |
| Mum's birthday | Family, up one step | 15 roses | ฿2,999 | "Thank you for the cooking. Sunday lunch is mine." |
| Anniversary | Long partner, up one step | 40 roses | ฿4,499 | "Another year. Same table?" |
| Big anniversary or proposal | Milestone | 50 to 100 roses | ฿8,999 | Write it yourself; keep it short. |
| Apology | Friend or partner | 20 roses | ฿3,299 | "I was wrong. Let me make it right." |
Where a row gives a range, the price shown is the top of it; the tier table above gives the neighbours.
Frequently asked questions
How much should you spend on flowers for a first date?
Keep it small: five or ten roses is enough. A large bouquet can feel like pressure on a first date. Five roses or ten work well, and handing them over yourself avoids needing an address. Put the rest into the evening and a short, specific card.
Is 100 roses too much for a birthday?
Usually, yes, unless it is a milestone birthday for a long-term partner who enjoys big gestures. A hundred roses need a bucket or a very large vase and 24 hours' notice. For most birthdays, 20 to 40 roses with a good card and a booked table does more. Save 100 for a proposal or a milestone.
How much should you spend on flowers for a girlfriend or boyfriend?
Match the stage, then adjust for the occasion. In the first months, 10 to 20 roses is plenty. For a partner of a year or more, 20 to 40 suits a birthday or anniversary. Keep 50 and above for milestones, and spend what you would be content with if the reply were a simple thank-you.
Does a budget bouquet look cheap?
Not if it is well chosen and tied. Five or ten roses in a single colour look intentional, while a large bunch in clashing colours can look careless. Colour does not change the price at a given size, so pick the one that suits the person. Presentation and a good card matter more than the count.
How do I get the best value flowers in Bangkok?
Decide how much to spend on flowers by the method above, then order the smaller bouquet and spend the rest on a personal card or a small companion gift. Order midweek, avoid peak dates and pass on a few care tips. Compare quotes on the same specification, as our guide to cheap vs premium flowers explains.
Can I get help choosing a size?
Yes. Tell us who it is for, where it will go and the date, and we will suggest a tier and confirm the total before you pay. You can message us on LINE or WhatsApp at any hour, and the rose range shows every size with its current price.
