Apology Flowers: What to Send, What to Write and When Not To

Apology flowers only work after you have said sorry. What to send in Bangkok, which colours suit, what to write on the card and when to skip them.

Apology flowers are a small, physical way to show that you meant it. They are not the apology. If you have forgotten a birthday, snapped at dinner or let someone down at the worst moment, the order of events matters more than the bouquet: say sorry first, in your own words, and let the flowers arrive afterwards as proof that you are still thinking about it.

This guide covers which flowers to say sorry with, which colours suit, how big to go, what to write on the card, where to send it in Bangkok and when to leave the flowers out altogether. If you are in a hurry, our I'm sorry flowers page for Bangkok has the shortlist; the sections below explain why those choices work.

What apology flowers can and cannot do

Flowers can do three things in an apology. They show effort, because someone had to choose and order them. They show attention, because the colour and size were picked for this person. And they leave something on the table after the conversation is over, a quiet reminder that you took it seriously.

They cannot do the work of the apology itself. The British Psychological Society summarises work by Fehr and Gelfand showing that apologies have three components: compensation, empathy and acknowledgement of the rule that was broken. It also notes that which component works best depends on the person receiving it. A bouquet is a form of compensation. It supplies neither empathy nor acknowledgement. Those have to come from you, in words.

There is a wider pattern too. The Gottman Institute reports longitudinal studies in which stable, happy couples had at least five positive interactions for every negative one during conflict. The useful reading is that one bad moment is repaired by many small good ones; a gift is one of them, not a substitute for the rest.

So the honest promise is modest. Apology flowers will not make anyone forgive you faster. They will make a sincere apology feel more complete, and they will make an insincere one look worse. Two failures are common: flowers instead of the conversation, which says "I would rather pay than listen", and flowers as a reset button with a card that pretends everything is fine. If you are not ready to say the words, do not order yet.

The apology comes first; the flowers arrive second

Say it the same day if you can, and say it in person or by voice. A call is better than a message, and a message is better than silence. The NHS guidance on healthy relationships lists respect, support and open, honest conversation as key ingredients, and advises taking a break during conflict and returning to talk once you are both calm. If the first conversation went badly, give it a few hours and try again.

A good spoken apology has four parts, and none of them involves the word "but".

  1. Name what you did, specifically. "I was late again and told you only when you were already waiting" beats "sorry about earlier".
  2. Say how it landed, as far as you know. "That made it feel like it didn't matter" shows you were listening.
  3. Take responsibility without a defence. Reasons can come later, if they ask.
  4. Say what you will do differently, but only what you will actually do.

Then stop and let them answer. If they say they need time, believe them.

The flowers belong after that conversation. Think of them as the second message: "I meant it, and I am still thinking about it". They land well the next morning, the day after, or after a dinner you cooked or a chore you took off their plate. They land badly in the middle of an argument, because they read as a move rather than a gesture.

The one exception is when the apology cannot happen immediately: a partner abroad on a work trip, or a person who has said they are not ready to talk. Send a short card saying you are sorry and ready to talk whenever they are. Do not ask for a reply.

Which flowers for which apology: late, forgotten, a real hurt

A bouquet that fits a small slip looks wrong after a real hurt, and a grand gesture after a minor lapse puts the focus on you instead of them. Match the flowers to the apology.

What happened What to send Why it fits
Late, cancelled plans, an unanswered call 10 white-pink roses Warm and proportionate; says "I noticed" without making a scene
Forgot a birthday, anniversary or something that mattered to them 20 pink roses or a Signature design Shows you took it seriously and made an effort
Said something unkind, broke a promise A soft Signature design with a very short card The words carry the weight; the flowers stay quiet
A real hurt: a lie, a pattern, broken trust Possibly nothing yet Flowers can feel like pressure when the harm is serious

Late or thoughtless

This is the small apology: a dinner you reached forty minutes late, a plan you cancelled twice, a reply left unanswered for two days. Ten roses is enough. A modest bouquet says "I know that was annoying and I wanted to say so properly" without turning a minor lapse into an event.

Forgotten

A forgotten birthday, anniversary or anything the other person had marked as important is a bigger miss, because the hurt is "you did not hold the thing that mattered to me". Go one size up: twenty roses, or one of the Signature designs. Pair it with something specific, such as a table booked for a date that suits them. If the miss was an anniversary, our guide to anniversary flowers by year helps you choose a gesture that also recovers the occasion.

A real hurt

When you are apologising for a lie, a repeated pattern or something said in anger that cut deep, a bouquet is not the first answer. The Cleveland Clinic's signs of a healthy relationship put reliability, commitment and respect for boundaries at the centre. Those are shown through behaviour over time, not through a delivery. If you do send flowers, keep them quiet and the card short. A large bouquet after a serious hurt can look like an attempt to buy a quicker answer.

Colours: why white-pink and pink outperform red here

This is editorial judgement, not data; we know of no study that tests bouquet colour in an apology. What exists is the traditional meaning of colours and a plain reading of what each one says when it arrives.

The Royal Horticultural Society notes that in the Victorian language of flowers a red rose meant love. That is the difficulty in an apology. Red says "I love you", which may be true, but it is a different sentence from "I'm sorry". Together they can look as if you are skipping past the apology to the romance, which is presumptuous when you have just hurt someone.

The RHS's list of traditional flower meanings gives pink roses admiration, joy and gratitude, and white roses truth and innocence. Neither list is a rule, and not every Thai reader shares a Victorian code, but the broad point holds: pink and white ask less of the recipient. They say "I am thinking of you" rather than "I am declaring something".

Florists reach the same answer from the trade side. The Society of American Florists' gift tips suggest a blend of soft pinks and lavenders to apologise with sincerity, and add that the delivery should be followed by a phone call. We would put the call first, but the point stands: the flowers and the conversation go together.

For apology flowers, white-pink, the soft blend of white and pink roses we stock, is our usual suggestion. It is quiet, it does not carry red's romantic weight, and it does not read as sympathy the way an all-white arrangement can. Our guide to red versus pink roses covers the wider colour question, and you can browse the white-pink range by size.

Red is still right when it is their favourite colour, or when the argument was about neglecting the romance itself. The test is whether you can picture them smiling when it arrives rather than wincing. When unsure, go pink.

Size without grandstanding: ten, twenty, or a Signature design

Apology flowers should be proportionate. The recipient should think "that is thoughtful", not "that is a lot". An enormous arrangement turns the apology into a performance the person now has to respond to.

For most apologies, ten or twenty roses is the right range. Ten white-pink roses are ฿2,399 delivered, and twenty pink roses are ฿3,299. Our guide to how many roses to send explains what each count says.

Ten suits the small apology and fits anywhere, from a studio in Ari to a serviced apartment off Sukhumvit, without crowding the table. Twenty is the bigger apology, the forgotten occasion or the repeated lapse: generous but personal, not grand.

If a rose bouquet feels too plain, a Signature design may suit better. The Ivory Claret pairs ivory spray roses with astrantia and eucalyptus, with a trace of claret in the astrantia; it is pale from a distance, with some depth close up, which suits a longer relationship. The White Room is all white and low in scent, which is why we also send it to hospital rooms. That makes it a calm choice if the person is sensitive to fragrance, though it can feel clinical for a romantic apology. Each page lists the stems, the wrap and the current price.

Do not go to fifty or a hundred roses to apologise for a missed dinner. The scale will confuse the message, and the card will matter more than the stem count anyway.

Writing the card: own it, no "if", no explanation

Most apology flowers are saved or sunk by the card. The Society of American Florists' gift tips say much the same: a card message with personal meaning is what makes the gift. A good one is short, specific and free of defence. Three rules do most of the work.

Own it. Use "I". "I'm sorry I forgot your birthday" owns it. "I'm sorry things got tense" does not.

No "if". "I'm sorry if I hurt you" hands the question of whether you hurt them back to them. Say "I'm sorry I hurt you", or, if you are unsure what the hurt was, wait and ask before you write.

No explanation. "I'm sorry I was late, but Rama IV was gridlocked" gives the apology and then takes it back. If there is a reason, offer it in conversation when asked.

Starting points, not scripts; change the details until every word is true.

  • "I forgot, and I should not have. I'm sorry. Dinner is booked for Saturday if you want to come."
  • "I was short with you on Sunday and you didn't deserve it. I'm sorry."
  • "I let you down on Thursday and I know it. I'm sorry. I'll call tonight."
  • "No reply needed. I wanted you to know I'm sorry and that I'm still thinking about it."
  • "I'm sorry for what I said. I'm ready to listen whenever you are."

Two or three sentences is the right length. A long card reads as a monologue and asks the reader to process your feelings while they are still processing their own. If you want a printed card, the greeting cards page has options; a handwritten line is usually enough.

Timing and where to send it

The sequence is apology first, flowers second, action third. Within that, a workable pattern is: say sorry the same day or next morning, give them space if they ask, send the flowers within a day or two with a short card, and then do the thing you said you would do.

For the delivery itself, our same-day flower delivery covers bouquets up to 40 roses ordered by 9 pm Bangkok time, and 50 roses by 7 pm. We do not promise an arrival clock time, so plan around "the afternoon" or "this evening" rather than an hour. Our guide to what same-day delivery in Bangkok can actually do explains how to judge any florist's promise.

Send to home, not the office

A bouquet delivered to someone's workplace puts the apology in front of colleagues, who will ask questions. The recipient has to perform gratitude or hide discomfort in front of an audience. Even someone who loves flowers may not want the whole floor to know you are in trouble.

Send to an address you already have because it is theirs and you share it, or one they have told you they are happy to receive deliveries at. If you are not sure, ask: "Can I send you something? Where would you like it?" That gives them a choice. Do not find an address through a friend, social media or an old order; the same ask-first rule applies to any office or condo, as our guide to flower giving etiquette in Thailand explains.

In a condo, deliveries often wait at the juristic office or the front desk until the resident collects them. That can suit an apology well, because the flowers sit in neutral territory until the person is ready. Our guide to flower delivery to a Bangkok condo explains how to set that up.

Not an ambush

Avoid a delivery that catches the person unprepared: mid-meeting, at the end of a long shift, as they leave for an event. Evening at home usually works better than the middle of the working day.

If you live together, you can skip delivery. Buy flowers on the way home, add the card, and put them where they will be seen. Pak Khlong Talat, the wholesale and retail flower market a short walk from Sanam Chai MRT station, is open 24 hours and liveliest after midnight and before dawn, which suits an early start better than a 7 pm detour on the way home. When flowers are the wrong move

Sometimes a good apology has nothing to do with flowers. These are the cases where we would hold off.

They have asked for space. A delivery that arrives during a silence they requested feels like pressure. The Utah State University Extension guide to boundaries says boundaries are personal limits that help both people feel safe and respected, differ for everyone and can change over time. Honouring them is part of the apology.

You have not said sorry in words yet. Without the conversation, flowers are premature. Have it first.

The harm is serious or ongoing. After violence, coercion, repeated cruelty or a breach of trust that is still unresolved, flowers are not an answer, and they can look like an attempt to cut short an accountability process. Listen, take responsibility and let the other person decide what happens next. Sometimes that means letting them go without contact.

It has become a pattern. If you apologise with flowers every few weeks for the same behaviour, the bouquet is no longer an apology. It is a ritual that makes the behaviour easier to repeat. The kinder thing is to change what you do, and save the flowers for something smaller.

They have blocked you, cut contact or asked you to stop. One message saying you are sorry is enough. If they do not reply, leave it. Sending flowers after silence is escalation, not repair.

Sometimes the better gesture is practical: take on a chore they dislike, plan a day around what they enjoy, or arrive on time for a month. A bouquet can sit beside these things but should never be the only one.

Worked examples with price tokens

These are invented situations, not real customers.

Example 1: late to dinner, twice

Say you promised to meet your partner for dinner in Thonglor at 7 pm and arrived at 8:15 because a meeting overran. It is the second time this month. You apologised that night; they said it was fine, but stayed quiet.

The next afternoon you order 10 white-pink roses at ฿2,399 for home delivery that evening, well inside the 9 pm same-day cut-off. The card reads: "I was late twice and I know it adds up. I'm sorry. I've cleared Thursday for you, phone off." It is proportionate and specific, and it asks for nothing.

Example 2: a forgotten anniversary

Say you forgot your third anniversary and your wife mentioned it at breakfast with a tight smile. You said sorry on the spot, but the day stays flat. That afternoon you book a table for Saturday, then order 20 pink roses at ฿3,299 for your shared home. The card says: "I forgot, and I'm sorry. I'd like to take you to dinner on Saturday, properly this time." Booking first means the invitation is real by the time the flowers arrive.

Example 3: something said in anger

Say you were sharp about your girlfriend's family during an argument and she has gone quiet. You apologised, and she asked for a few days.

You wait. Three days later, after she has messaged first, you ask where she would like a small delivery to go. She says her condo. You send The Ivory Claret, a pale bouquet with only a trace of colour, and the note says: "I'm sorry for what I said about your family. No reply needed." The restraint is the point: small flowers, a short card, nothing asked of her. Where the relationship is new, keep it smaller still; flowers for your girlfriend by stage explains why a bouquet that fits week six is wrong for year four. If the apology is to a boyfriend or husband, our guide to flowers for men covers palettes and pairings that suit him.

Example 4: a small slip, with something sweet

Say you forgot to pass on a message and a friend missed an event. It was a mistake, not a betrayal. A small pink bouquet from the rose range with a one-line card is plenty; if you want something sweet alongside, the chocolate box sets list current options. If nothing ready-made fits, the build-your-own tool lets you choose count and colour to match what you know they like.

Frequently asked questions

Do apology flowers work?

They work as part of an apology, not instead of one. The apology has to come first, in words, and the flowers show you took it seriously. On their own they can look like an attempt to dodge the conversation. After a sincere apology, they are a warm follow-up the person can keep on a table for a week.

What are the best flowers for an apology?

White-pink or pink roses are the safest choice because they read as gentle and carry less romantic weight than red. Ten roses suits a small slip and twenty suits a bigger miss. A soft Signature design is a good alternative when a rose bouquet feels too plain for the situation.

Should I send red roses to say sorry?

Usually not. Red traditionally means love, which is a different message from an apology. If red is their favourite, or the argument was about romance itself, it can work. When in doubt, choose white-pink or pink and let the card say the words.

What do I write on an apology card?

Keep the card to two or three sentences. Own the mistake with "I", avoid "if" and skip explanations. "I forgot, and I'm sorry. Dinner is booked for Saturday" works. Do not demand a reply; "no reply needed" lets the person respond when they are ready.

Can I send apology flowers to a friend or colleague?

Yes, when the mistake was real and you have already said sorry in words. Keep it smaller than you would for a partner: five or ten white-pink or orange roses, no red, and a card that names the slip without a speech. For a colleague, hand them over yourself at the end of the day rather than staging a delivery at their desk, and check any office gift rule first.

How fast can I get sorry flowers in Bangkok?

Same-day delivery is available for bouquets up to 40 roses ordered by 9 pm Bangkok time, and 50 roses by 7 pm. We do not promise an arrival time, so plan for the afternoon or evening rather than a set hour. Seventy and 100 roses need 24 hours' notice; ask on the contact page if you are unsure which size fits.

When should I not send apology flowers?

Skip them if the person has asked for space, if you have not yet said sorry in words, or if the harm is serious or ongoing. Do not send flowers after being blocked or after silence. A short, respectful message is enough, and whether to reply is their decision.
