Thai Graduation Flowers: What to Bring and When Ceremonies Happen

Thai graduation — รับปริญญา — is a substantially bigger event than its equivalent in most countries. Ceremonies are formal, often presided over by a member of the royal family or a senior representative, and the whole extended family attends.

Flowers are central, and there are conventions worth knowing.

When they happen

Unlike the June–July concentration common elsewhere, Thai university graduations are spread across the calendar and vary by institution — many fall between October and February, but each university sets its own date and it can shift year to year.

Practical consequence: do not assume. Ask the graduate for the exact date, and be aware that rehearsal days (ซ้อมรับปริญญา) happen days or weeks earlier and also involve photographs and flowers.

The structure of the day

Ceremonies are long and tightly controlled. Graduates are typically inside the hall for hours, and family members frequently cannot enter at all.

The flowers therefore happen outside, before and after, on the campus lawns — which is where the photographs are taken. Expect crowds, heat, and a lot of standing around.

This shapes what you should bring.

What to bring

Bring it on the day, to the campus. Not delivered to a home in advance. The bouquet is a photograph prop as much as a gift.

Keep it carryable. This is the single most useful piece of advice. A graduate in a heavy gown, in October heat, holding a mortarboard, being photographed continuously for four hours, cannot manage a forty-stem presentation bouquet. They will hand it to a parent within ten minutes.

A hand-tied bouquet of 10–20 stems is right. Something they can hold in one arm.

Consider the volume problem. A popular student receives many bouquets. If you want yours to be the one they keep, small and beautiful beats large and unwieldy — or send a money bouquet, which solves the problem entirely and is completely conventional here.

Colours

Bright and celebratory. There is no strong colour convention specific to graduation, so this is mostly free choice.

Popular: sunflowers (overwhelmingly common and genuinely appropriate — they photograph well against academic gowns), orange and yellow roses, pink, mixed brights.

Consider the gown colour. Thai academic dress varies by institution and faculty, and the photographs are the point. Against a dark gown, bright warm colours read best. Against a lighter gown, deeper tones.

Avoid all-white, which reads funerary in Thai contexts.

Practical notes for the day

Order at least a week ahead. Graduation days concentrate enormous demand at a small number of florists near each campus, and prices near the gates on the day are high for poor stems.

Collect rather than deliver, if you can. Campus delivery on graduation day is genuinely difficult — closed roads, crowds, no fixed meeting point, and phone networks that struggle under load. Picking up on the way is more reliable.

If you must have it delivered, agree a specific, findable landmark and a time, and get the graduate's phone number.

Bring water. Not for the flowers — for yourself. It is a long, hot day.
