Thai Father's Day Flowers: Canna, 5 December and What to Send

Thai Father's Day flowers explained: why 5 December, why the canna, and what to send a dad or father-in-law in Bangkok, with timing and three plans.

Thai Father's Day flowers come down to one date and one plant: 5 December, and the canna. The date and the plant are easy to explain. The harder part is that the canna is rarely sold as a cut bouquet flower, so most people have to decide what to hand their father alongside it, or instead of it.

This is the florist's version: the date, the plant, what to give instead or as well, how to treat a father-in-law, and how the public holiday affects ordering in Bangkok. Three worked plans close the article.

Thai Father's Day flowers: why 5 December and why the canna

Thailand marks Father's Day on 5 December, the birthday of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Rama IX. The Nation Thailand's history of the day says his 5 December birthday has been celebrated as Father's Day since 1980, and as Thai National Day since 1960. A Thai government page names the same occasion as the National Day, the King's birthday anniversary and Thailand's Father's Day, and notes that Thai embassies abroad observe it.

So the date does double duty. The Thailand Foundation describes National Day on 5 December as a day of patriotic pride, marked by official speeches, ceremonies and acts of public service. Families use the same day to thank their own fathers.

That is where the flower comes in. The Nation Thailand reports that the yellow phuttharaksa takes centre stage every 5 December, symbolising the Monday birthday colour of King Bhumibol, and that the name translates as "a Buddha who protects".

The pairing resembles Thai Mother's Day, with one difference. On 12 August the flower is jasmine, which is sold everywhere as garlands; our post on Thai Mother's Day flowers and jasmine covers that side. On 5 December the symbolic flower is far less convenient to turn into a gift, which is the problem the rest of this article solves.

One honest note. The sources support the date, the colour link and the meaning of the name; they say nothing about how your family celebrates or what your father wants to unwrap. His tastes decide.

The canna (phuttharaksa): what it looks like and what it stands for

The canna is a tall garden plant with broad, paddle-shaped leaves, a bit like a small banana leaf, and stiff stems topped with clusters of bright, slightly ruffled flowers in red, orange or yellow. For Thai Father's Day flowers the yellow one matters, because of the colour link above.

In Thai the plant is ดอกพุทธรักษา, phuttharaksa, sometimes spelt puttaraksa. The Thailand Foundation's guide to Thai-style offerings lists Puttaraksa, literally "protected by Buddha", among the auspiciously named flowers favoured for offerings, and says flowers are among the most common offerings made to monks, Buddha images and people of higher rank to show respect. The plant already carried a protective, respectful meaning before it became the canna flower of Father's Day. Its name is the message.

It is a symbol more than a bouquet: you see it in schools, offices and public displays on 5 December, rarely as a hand-tied bunch at a flower stall. And nobody expects a father to receive nothing but canna; it is the token for the ceremony or the photo, and the rest of the gift is yours to choose.

A florist's caution applies. Canna is mainly a garden and roadside plant, and its stems are not built for vase life the way roses are. If you want a canna stem or a small canna arrangement, ask before you order and treat anything not confirmed in chat as unavailable.

What to actually give your dad: a canna stem, a bouquet or something to open

Father's Day has two jobs. One is symbolic: something that says "5 December" at a glance. The other is personal: something your father will use after the photo. Most good gifts split those jobs between two objects.

If your family expects the yellow flower, because there is a ceremony, a school or office event, or a photo with the grandparents, a canna stem or small arrangement is the symbolic half. Ask whether it can be added through LINE or WhatsApp, and agree the stem count and colour.

For the personal half, ask not "what do fathers like" but "what does this father do on a Saturday". Most searches for flowers for dad in Thailand end at a rose bouquet, and that is a fair answer, but a gourmet set that turns into lunch, a board game for a father who likes company, or a book for one who likes quiet may fit him better. The Father's Day page gathers the designs we point to first.

The decision table

You or your father abroad Rose bouquet to a named address Board game or book for the evening Three days before; agree the date in Thai time

Father who says he dislikes flowers Foliage-heavy design, no fuss A book or board game does the talking The evening before
Many fathers, one office One bouquet per person Same card, different names Count early; 70 and 100 roses need 24 hours

Flowers for men on Father's Day: palettes and designs that suit him

Thai Father's Day flowers for him follow the same logic as any bouquet for a man, and our guide to flowers for men works through it. The short version, tuned to 5 December:

Orange, to echo the canna without copying it. Our roses come in red, pink, white-pink and orange, so there is no yellow rose to match the day; if yellow matters to your family, it belongs on the canna stem, not the bouquet. Orange is the closest warm colour to the canna's reds and oranges, energetic without being romantic, and right for a father of any age. Ten orange roses cost ฿2,399, delivered. The bouquet fits on a dining table without taking it over, and it is the right size for a father-in-law you do not know well yet.

Deep red, for a bigger statement. 20 red roses are ฿3,299 delivered. Twenty stems look deliberate from across a room, which suits a retired civil servant, a restaurant owner or a quiet man who rarely gets noticed. Red roses can read as romantic elsewhere, so make the card clearly filial: address it to Khun Pho and sign it with your family name.

Foliage-heavy, for the father who says no to flowers. The Iron Gate is burgundy roses against dark ruscus and eucalyptus, with a flat face and plenty of green. For the father who insists he is not a flowers person it is the one we suggest; our guide to flowers for men explains why the foliage does the work. Paired with a charcuterie and cheese box it becomes The Iron Gate with a gourmet set, which has to reach a fridge, so time it for when someone is in.

Leave out pale pastels and heart-shaped add-ons; they belong to other occasions. If your father would be embarrassed by a bouquet at the office, send it to the house, and if he would be embarrassed at home, ask your mother or sister where it should land. For the birthday version of the same question, the gifts for him page is a starting point.

For a father-in-law or an elder: the wai, the handover and the card

A father-in-law raises the stakes, not because he is fussier but because you have less history to fall back on. How you give matters as much as what you give, and on 5 December the day has its own shape: he may be at a ceremony, a school event or the temple in the morning, so ask your partner when the family actually sits down, and arrive then rather than early. The first-visit rules, down to where to put the bouquet while you take off your shoes, are in our guide to flowers for a mother-in-law.

The handover

In the Thailand Foundation's account of the wai, the height is set by respect: thumbs to the tip of the nose for parents and elders, which is the one a father-in-law gets. Hands full of bouquet cannot wai, so the order is flowers first, in both hands, then the wai once he holds them.

Keep the bouquet below his head. The Thailand Foundation's guide to Thai etiquette describes the head as the highest and most sacred point of the body and the feet as the lowest, so do not set a gift on the floor or pass it over his head at a crowded table. The full version, for elders, monks and hosts on any day, is in our guide to flower-giving etiquette in Thailand.

The house

The Cultural Atlas lists fruit, flowers, cake and liquor as the usual things to bring a Thai host, adds that none is compulsory, and reminds visitors to leave shoes at the door and step over the threshold rather than on it. Two Father's Day specifics on top: bring fruit for his wife if she is hosting the lunch, and do not leave the bouquet in the kitchen for someone to deal with. Hand it to him and let him decide where it goes.

The card

Address it the way your partner addresses him. Many families use "Khun Pho" (คุณพ่อ) for a father; for a father-in-law, ask your partner which form is used, and write the card in Thai with the English beside it. Short lines that work:

  • "สุขสันต์วันพ่อ ขอบคุณที่ดูแลครอบครัวเสมอ" (Happy Father's Day, thank you for always looking after the family).
  • "To Khun Pho, from all of us. Thank you for Sunday lunches."
  • "Happy Father's Day. The orange is for the garden you keep."

Keep it to one or two lines, and leave out apologies, jokes at his expense and promises you cannot keep; the three-line method in our guide to what to write on a flower card works for a father too.

When not to

If your father-in-law is in hospital, or the family has recently lost someone, ask before sending anything. A cheerful bouquet on Father's Day can be the wrong move, and a quiet phone call the right one. It is also the wrong move if he has said he would rather you spent the money on a family meal; then buy the meal.

Pairings: gourmet sets, board games, books and cake with flowers

Every gift on our site comes with flowers, so a Father's Day gift in Bangkok from us is really a question of which second item suits your father. The page names what is inside each set; ask about allergies and dietary needs before you order.

The gourmet sets are the grown-up option, food plus flowers, for when the family eats together. A hamper suits a larger gathering, or an office that wants something shareable. A board game bundle suits a father who enjoys company; the game is named on each page, so check player count and age guidance. It gives you a card line with a use: "Saturday after lunch, you are the one who explains the rules."

A book with flowers is the quiet option for a father who reads or would rather have an hour to himself than a party. Choose by his habits, not the cover. For a family lunch with a table to put it on, a cake with 20 red roses fits; check the page for size and current price.

Timing around the public holiday: closures, traffic and ordering early

In 2026, 5 December falls on a Saturday. Thai public holidays that fall on a weekend may be moved or extended, so check the government announcement for whether a weekday is added. The Tourism Authority of Thailand's calendar for 2025 listed 5 to 7 December as a three-day Father's Day break and warned that accommodation and popular attractions fill up quickly over public holidays. That is a fair guide to how the long weekend behaves.

We have no published 2026 calendar to quote and will not guess. What changes around a holiday weekend:

  • Offices and building management close. A condo juristic office or office-tower reception that is staffed on a Friday may not be on the holiday. Say who will accept the flowers, or choose a day when someone is there.
  • Traffic follows the ceremonies. Families travel to temples, to parents' homes outside the city and to public events, and if there are official ceremonies in the old city, expect closures around them. A delivery to a house in the outer districts or Nonthaburi can take longer than on an ordinary Saturday. The delivery page lists coverage and arrangements; ask in chat for your day.
  • Recipients are out. Fathers are at ceremonies, lunch or the temple. A bouquet that arrives when nobody is home sits in the heat.
  • Demand clusters. Offices and families order the same morning; ask early.

The lead times do not bend for holidays. Same-day delivery covers bouquets of up to 40 roses ordered by 9 pm Bangkok time, and 50 roses by 7 pm. Seventy and 100 roses need 24 hours' notice, 200 roses 48 hours and 500 roses 48 to 72 hours. We do not promise an exact arrival time, so build in a buffer.

A working timeline:

  1. Ten days before: decide whether you want a canna stem and ask whether it can be added. It is the item most likely to take time to confirm.
  2. Five days before: choose the bouquet and the pairing. Write the card and have the Thai checked by someone who reads it.
  3. Three days before: place the order for an agreed delivery date, and ask your partner to confirm who will be home.
  4. The day before: confirm the address, contact number and handover. If you are carrying it yourself, arrange to receive it the evening before.

For offices, move everything a working day earlier: the last working day before the holiday is when everyone else is trying to send something too.

Sending from abroad to a father in Bangkok

If you are the child abroad sending Thai Father's Day flowers, settle three things: the address, the date in Thai time and the handover.

The address. Give a full address a driver can find, in Thai if you can. For a house, add a landmark: a temple, a 7-Eleven, a school. For a condominium, give the building, tower and floor, and say whether to leave it with the juristic office. Add the name of someone who will answer the phone; many people ignore unknown numbers.

The date in Thai time. Bangkok is seven hours ahead of GMT. The 9 pm cut-off for same-day bouquets up to 40 roses falls at 2 pm GMT in December and 9 am in New York. From Sydney it falls at 1 am, so order the day before. Write the date as "5 December, Bangkok time" so nobody has to guess.

The handover. Confirm the total and payment method in chat before the day, not on it. Tell your father the flowers are coming so a stranger at the gate does not surprise him. Our guide to international flower delivery to Thailand compares the four ways to order from overseas. To ask about a canna stem or timing, contact us and give the date up front.

If you cannot be there, ask a sibling or cousin to be the pair of hands: flowers taken with both hands, a wai, and a sentence saying they are from you.

Three worked plans with price tokens

Names and situations below are made up to show the reasoning.

Plan one: a daughter in London, a father in Nonthaburi. Mali's father is retired and gardens at his house in Nonthaburi. She chooses 20 red roses at ฿3,299 with a gourmet set so the family can share it at lunch, and asks whether a single canna stem can be added for the photo. If it cannot, the roses go ahead alone. She orders on 2 December, writes "5 December, Bangkok time" and gives her brother's phone number. The card: "สุขสันต์วันพ่อ จากมาลี ขอบคุณสำหรับสวนที่ทำให้บ้านเรามีสีเขียว" (Happy Father's Day, from Mali, thank you for the garden that keeps our house green).

Plan two: an expat son-in-law and a first Father's Day. Tom lives in Ari. His partner's father lives in a townhouse in Bang Na and says he needs nothing. Tom picks 10 orange roses at ฿2,399 in the black wrap and has them delivered to his own condo the evening before. On the day he takes his shoes off, hands the flowers over with both hands and a wai, and says one sentence in Thai his partner has taught him. The card: "To Khun Pho, from Tom and Nid". He skips the gift set; a father who says he needs nothing is easier to please with one good thing than a pile.

Plan three: an office in Sathorn. A finance team of fourteen wants to thank its director before the holiday. He is private, so the team chooses a hamper for the office and one bouquet of 10 orange roses at ฿2,399 for his desk, after checking the hamper page for anything he cannot eat. They order on the Wednesday before the last working day, with delivery to tower reception and a named person to receive it, since the juristic office may be closed on the holiday itself. The card, signed by everyone: "From all of us in Finance, with thanks for the year." Thanking a senior colleague without it looking like favour-seeking is covered in our guide to thank you flowers.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Thai Father's Day on 5 December?

It is the birthday of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Rama IX, celebrated as Father's Day since 1980 and as National Day since 1960, according to The Nation Thailand. Official ceremonies mark the national side; families use the day to thank their own fathers.

What is the Thai Father's Day flower?

It is the canna, called phuttharaksa (ดอกพุทธรักษา), usually pictured in yellow. The name means "a Buddha who protects", and yellow links to King Bhumibol's Monday birthday colour. It is a symbol more than a bouquet flower, so many people give a small canna stem alongside roses, a gourmet set or another gift.

Can I send a canna bouquet in Bangkok?

It depends on availability. Canna is not a standard cut-flower bouquet, so ask the florist before you order, and treat any item not confirmed in writing as unavailable. A rose bouquet or gift set can be planned in the meantime. Message us on LINE or WhatsApp with the date and address.

What should I give my father-in-law on Father's Day?

Something modest and clearly meant for him: 10 orange roses, a card addressed with khun, and a handover with both hands and a wai. A gourmet set or a book can go with it. If he says he wants nothing, one good bouquet and a family lunch beat a large gift.

Is Father's Day a public holiday in Thailand?

Yes. TAT's calendar for 2025 listed 5 to 7 December as a three-day Father's Day break. In 2026 the date falls on a Saturday, so check the official announcement for any added weekday, plan around building closures and traffic, and order early for larger bouquets.

How early should I order Thai Father's Day flowers?

For up to 40 roses, same-day delivery works if you order by 9 pm Bangkok time, but a holiday weekend rewards planning, so order three or more days ahead. Seventy and 100 roses need 24 hours' notice, 200 roses 48 hours. See the delivery page and confirm the date in chat.

Can I send Father's Day flowers from abroad?

Yes. Order in chat, give a full address and a reachable contact, and write the date as "5 December, Bangkok time". Bangkok is seven hours ahead of GMT, so check the 9 pm cut-off in your own time zone. Ask a relative to receive the flowers and wai when they take them.

Tell us the occasion. We will do the rest.
