Flowers for Mother in Law: First Meetings, Birthdays and Thai Customs
Flowers for mother in law in Thailand: what to bring to a first visit, how to hand it over, which colours read well, and when fruit or a garland is better.

Choosing flowers for a mother in law, or for your partner's parents before they are anything of the kind, is a different job from choosing flowers for your partner. The goal is respect and warmth, not romance, so most of the advice in our romance posts inverts here. This guide covers what to bring to a Thai family home, how to hand it over after the wai, and which colours and flowers read well to a Thai mother.
It also covers her birthday, Mother's Day, the engagement visit, parents outside Bangkok, pairings and the card in English and Thai. Where a custom varies by household, we say "ask your partner".
Flowers for mother in law: why they work and when they backfire
Flowers for in-laws work because they are small, visible and easy to receive. The Cultural Atlas's Thai etiquette entry puts flowers on the short list of what a guest can bring, alongside fruit, cake and a bottle, and says the host will not expect it.
The same flowers backfire when they say more than the relationship can carry. A big bouquet of red roses in front of a partner's mother reads as a performance, and a grand count has the same problem: 50 or 100 roses suit an anniversary, not a Sunday lunch in Bang Na.
What backfires
- Red-heavy roses. Red means love in the old language of flowers, as the Royal Horticultural Society's history of flower codes records. That is a message for your partner; our guide to flowers for your girlfriend at every stage is where it belongs.
- A size that needs a plan. A bouquet too big for the vase becomes a task for the host.
- All-white arrangements. Some families read plain white as funeral flowers; see our post on phuang reed and funeral flowers. White-pink avoids the question.
- Sending without asking. A delivery nobody expected makes your partner explain you before they are ready. Ask first, or carry the gift in yourself.
For the general rules on who, when and how many in Thailand, read our flower giving etiquette guide.
The first meeting: what to bring to a Thai family home
Start by asking your partner who will be home and whether the family likes flowers; some mothers keep a vase ready, others would rather have fruit, which gets eaten and needs no arranging.
Flowers for her parents first meeting: the safe default
For a first visit, the safest default is a small, soft-coloured bouquet plus something edible. Ten white-pink roses cost ฿2,399, and the bouquet fits a normal vase and a normal table. Add one of our fruit basket gifts if you can, because the combination covers both tastes in the family.
Meeting Thai parents: a gift for your girlfriend's or boyfriend's parents in Thailand
A gift for your girlfriend's parents in Thailand, or a boyfriend's, follows one logic: something for the household, nothing that looks like a statement. Emily Post's advice on hostess gifts calls a bouquet a classic, potted plants lovely, and says gifts should be within your means. A modest gift handed over properly beats an expensive one that makes the room uncomfortable; the same goes for flowers for his mother when you are the one being introduced.
Practical points for the day
Arrive on time rather than early; Emily Post's guest tips allow a guest up to a quarter of an hour after the stated time, never before it. In Bangkok, build in a margin for traffic and heat, and check which BTS or MRT exit is closest to the soi; a townhouse in a mu ban can be a ten-minute motorbike taxi from the station.
Take your shoes off at the door and avoid stepping on the threshold, as The Cultural Atlas advises. Do not expect a fuss: many Thai mothers take the gift with a small smile and hand it to someone to put in water; that is warmth, not coolness.
Elders and the wai: handing over flowers with respect
The Thailand Foundation's guide to the wai sets three heights: nose for parents and elders, brow for monks, and a lighter wai with a small bow for everyone else. The point of all three is respect.
A bouquet in both hands makes a proper wai impossible, so the order is:
- Offer the gift first, held in both hands at about chest height, with a short sentence in English or Thai.
- Once she has taken it, or passed it to someone, wai at the level for elders and parents. If the room is crowded, a slight bow while you hold the gift is fine.
- Let her decide what happens next. Do not ask her to arrange or show off the gift.
The height in step 1 comes from a wider custom. The Thailand Foundation explains in its piece on Thai etiquette around feet and head that the head is the most honoured part of a Thai body and the feet the least. Never hold a gift higher than her head, and do not put the bouquet on the floor while you take your shoes off; hand it to your partner for a moment instead.
How to address her
Use what your partner uses. Many families call a partner's mother khun mae (คุณแม่) and the father khun pho (คุณพ่อ); some prefer an informal "auntie" form. "Sawasdee kha" or "sawasdee khrap", then "this is for you, thank you for having me", is plenty.
Colours and flowers that read well to a Thai mother: pink, white-pink, orchids and jasmine
The best flowers for mother in law gifts in Thailand are pink, white-pink, orchids and jasmine, and pink does the most work. In the RHS's old flower code a pink rose stood for admiration, joy and gratitude, and gratitude is the point of the visit; our guide to flower meanings by flower weighs the others. Our pink rose range and the 20 pink roses bouquet are the starting points; a bouquet of 20 pink roses is ฿3,299.
White-pink looks clean and gentle, and it avoids the funeral association that plain white carries for some families. The Cultural Atlas's page on Chinese gift etiquette lists white flowers as a taboo gift and red and gold as the colours of luck, so a Chinese-Thai household in Yaowarat or Talat Noi may welcome red at Chinese New Year and still not want an all-white bouquet. Ask your partner whether the family avoids any colours, and see our Chinese New Year page and guide to Chinese New Year flowers in Thailand for the one occasion where red is expected.
Orchids: the flower that lasts
Orchids suit a mother in a condo or townhouse with little vase space. The RHS gives orchid a traditional meaning of longevity and elegance, and says the moth orchid is the indoor orchid most people succeed with: weeks of flower, bright light, no direct sun, so near a window rather than on the balcony rail. Our orchid care guide for Bangkok condos is the one to send her afterwards.
Our orchid range covers orchid arrangements, and the plants page lists potted phalaenopsis and dendrobium, each with a gift attached.
Jasmine and the garland
Jasmine is the flower most Thai people associate with their mother. On 12 August, the Thailand Foundation explains, children kneel to wai their mother and give her jasmine, dok mali, whose small white bud is read as purity and lasting love.
Thai PBS World describes phuang malai garlands as devotional and ceremonial, expressing gratitude and used for Mother's Day, weddings and temples; the Bangkok Post adds that they are presented to elders at Songkran. Our malai range has the options, but save a garland for a day with a reason, such as Mother's Day or an engagement.
Her birthday, Mother's Day and the engagement visit
Flowers for mother in law birthday: marking the day
Birthdays have not always been celebrated in Thailand. The Thailand Foundation notes that a Thai birthday traditionally meant tham bun, merit-making, and that the cake-and-candles party is a newer city habit. So ask what the family does before you choose.
If the family makes merit at a temple in the morning, a fruit basket is the easier gift to carry and share afterwards. If it is a Western-style dinner, a bouquet and a cake with flowers work; our birthday for her page is the starting point. For a milestone such as a sixtieth, size up a little rather than adding a statement: 20 stems instead of 10, or a plant that will live in her home.
Mother's Day on 12 August
Thai Mother's Day is on 12 August, the one day when flowers for a mother are most expected. Our Mother's Day page lists the gifts, and the jasmine Mother's Day post covers the tradition. Go with your partner and give your own gift after theirs.
Same-day delivery covers bouquets up to 40 roses ordered by 9 pm Bangkok time, but on a day every florist is busy, order a day or two early and check the delivery page.
The engagement visit
An engagement visit has more ritual than a birthday. The Thailand Foundation's wedding guide explains that engagement and wedding ceremonies are now commonly held on the same day, and that the groom's khan maak procession carries the sinsod, an engagement ring and auspicious items to the bride's home. The families arrange those, not the florist.
What you can add is a gift for the mother outside the ceremony: a jasmine garland with a fruit basket, because the garland shows respect and the fruit can be shared with relatives. Ask the family who is arranging what, and hand it over before or after the formal parts.
Flowers for your partner's father too: not leaving one parent out
A gift for one parent only creates an imbalance the other parent notices, so make the gift for the household or add a small second item for him. Many fathers like fruit, a hamper or a plant on the balcony more than a bouquet, and a hamper still comes with flowers.
Hand the gift to both parents, with a wai to each, and write "for you both" on the card.
Father's Day on 5 December
Thai Father's Day is on 5 December, the late King Bhumibol's birthday. The Nation Thailand reports that the yellow canna known as Phuttharaksa is the flower of that day, yellow being the colour of the King's Monday birthday. Our Father's Day page has current gifts, and our guide to Thai Father's Day flowers covers the canna, the public holiday and what to hand a father-in-law.
For a first meeting, though, a fruit basket for the family with a bouquet for her covers both parents without making his gift feel like a duty.
When the parents live outside Bangkok: what to ask before ordering
Plenty of Bangkok couples have parents in Nonthaburi, Samut Prakan, Chiang Mai or Khon Kaen, and ordering for a family home outside the city is a different question from ordering to a Sukhumvit condo: ask us before ordering.
Message us on LINE or WhatsApp with the district and province, and we will tell you whether we can reach it and what notice it needs. Do not promise the parents a delivery before you have that answer; the delivery page explains what each order needs.
What to ask yourself first
- Is it for a day, or for a visit? If you are travelling there anyway, order to your own place in Bangkok and carry it.
- Does it ride in a car for hours? Roses in April heat need water and shade; see our guide to making roses last in Bangkok heat. A potted orchid or a fruit basket handles a long drive up Highway 1 better than cut stems.
- Who will be at the address? Ask your partner who will receive it and which day suits, and let them tell the family to expect something.
A hospital stay
If a parent is in hospital, ask the ward first. Policies differ by hospital: University Hospital Southampton, for one, turns away flowers and plants at the door and suggests a little fruit instead. Read our guide to sending flowers to a Bangkok hospital before you order; if the ward says no, a fruit basket carried in at visiting time is the better gift.
Pairings: fruit baskets, hampers and cake
| Pairing | Suits | Why it works | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bouquet plus fruit basket | First visit, host gift, engagement | Fruit is on The Cultural Atlas's list of hostess gifts and is shared at the table | Ask about allergies or fruit she avoids |
| Jasmine garland with fruit basket | Mother's Day, engagement, a respectful thank-you | Garland for respect, fruit for sharing | Keep it cool; garlands are best handed over soon after they arrive |
| Potted orchid or plant | Condo or townhouse, long drive, no vase | Nothing to arrange; stays for weeks | Needs bright, not direct, light |
| Hamper | Both parents, large family, a thank-you after a stay | One gift for the household | Ask about dietary needs |
| Cake with flowers | Her birthday dinner | Easy to cut and share | Cream cakes need a fridge; see below |
Cake
A cake suits a Western-style birthday dinner. In Bangkok heat, the FDA says cream-filled and whipped-cream cakes must be kept refrigerated, so arrive close to serving time and never leave one in a car. The cake and flowers sets list current prices.
When not to add a pairing
If your partner says the family does not accept gifts, or the gift must travel hours, skip the cake and cut flowers. Bring fruit or a plant, or nothing, and thank people in person; arriving with nothing is not a failure.
If the visit is for a new home rather than a meal, the gift changes with it; our guide to housewarming flowers in Thailand covers the khuen ban mai ceremony.
What to write on the card in English and Thai
Write the card yourself and keep it short. The Society of American Florists puts the hand-written card at the heart of the gift; that is a trade view, but it holds for a mother too. The three-line method in our guide to what to write on a flower card applies, with the temperature turned down.
Do not agonise over the wording. Harvard Health reports that note-writers in one study expected an awkwardness that never came, while the recipients were more pleased than predicted.
Card lines that work
For a first visit:
- English: "Thank you for having me. I have been looking forward to meeting you."
- Thai: "ขอบคุณที่เชิญมาที่บ้านนะคะ/ครับ ดีใจที่ได้พบคุณแม่" (Thank you for inviting me to your home; I am glad to meet you.)
For a birthday:
- English: "Happy birthday. Thank you for welcoming me into the family."
- Thai: "สุขสันต์วันเกิดนะคะ/ครับ ขอบคุณที่ต้อนรับเสมอ" (Happy birthday, and thank you for always welcoming me.)
For Mother's Day:
- English: "Happy Mother's Day. Thank you for everything you have done for us."
- Thai: "สุขสันต์วันแม่นะคะ/ครับ ขอบคุณสำหรับทุกอย่างค่ะ/ครับ" (Happy Mother's Day, and thank you for everything.)
Use "ค่ะ" (kha) if you are a woman and "ครับ" (khrap) if you are a man, and ask your partner to check the Thai. Sign with your name and, if you like, your partner's. Nothing romantic, and no in-jokes the parents were not part of.
Three worked situations with price tokens
Most flowers for mother in law decisions fall into one of four situations; the examples are invented, so change the details to fit your family.
Decision table
| Situation | Bring or send | What | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| First dinner at the family home | Bring it yourself | 10 white-pink roses and a fruit basket | Small, soft, easy to receive; fruit covers both parents |
| Her 60th birthday, far from you | Send to the building | 20 pink roses with a cake or fruit | A milestone deserves a little more, still not a statement |
| Engagement visit | Bring it yourself | Jasmine garland with fruit basket, plus a small bouquet | Respect for the mother, fruit to share |
| Parents upcountry | Ask us first | Plant, fruit or a hamper | Travels better than cut stems; confirm delivery before promising |
Situation one: a first dinner in Bang Na
Say your partner's parents live in a townhouse in Bang Na, a short motorbike ride from BTS Bang Na, and invite you for dinner on Saturday. You do not want to carry a large bouquet on the train in the heat.
Order 10 white-pink roses at ฿2,399, delivered to your own place on Saturday morning; same day works for up to 40 roses ordered by 9 pm Bangkok time, but order the evening before if you want certainty. Add a fruit basket, so that your partner's father has something to take to the table. On the train, hold the bouquet upright and away from the sun by the door. The card reads: "Thank you for having me. I have been looking forward to meeting you."
Situation two: her 60th birthday, delivered to a Sathorn condo juristic office
Say your partner's mother lives in a Sathorn condo, you are out of town on her sixtieth birthday and your partner has said a delivery would be welcome. Many Bangkok condos hold deliveries at the juristic office or front desk, so get the building name, tower and unit from your partner and tell the building who the gift is for. The handover at the desk is explained in our condo delivery guide.
Choose 20 pink roses at ฿3,299, with a cake and flowers set if the family likes cake and someone is home to put it in the fridge. Order a day early and check the delivery page for lead times; we do not promise a clock time, and "in the afternoon" is as precise as it gets.
The card reads: "Happy birthday, khun mae. Thank you for welcoming me into the family."
Situation three: an engagement visit with a jasmine garland and fruit basket
Say you are visiting your partner's family in Chonburi before an engagement, and the elders will organise the formal procession. Your job is a gift for the mother that supports the day without competing with it.
Choose the jasmine garland with fruit basket for her, and 20 white-pink roses at ฿3,299 for the table. Chonburi is outside Bangkok, so message us first on LINE or WhatsApp about delivery, or order to your Bangkok address and drive both down in an air-conditioned car. The card reads: "Thank you for trusting me with your family. I will take good care of it."
Frequently asked questions
What flowers should I bring to meet my girlfriend's or boyfriend's mother in Thailand?
Bring a small, soft-coloured bouquet, such as pink or white-pink roses, and add a fruit basket if you can; both are appropriate gifts for a Thai hostess. Hand it over with both hands and wai once her hands are free.
Is it OK to give red roses to my mother in law?
Rarely the best choice. Red roses carry a romantic message, and for a first meeting they can feel too intense. Pink or white-pink roses say thank you and admiration without suggesting anything more. Some Chinese-Thai families welcome red at Chinese New Year, so ask your partner before you decide.
How many roses should I give my mother in law?
Ten is a safe size for a first visit and 20 suits a birthday or milestone. Counts such as 50 or 100 suit an anniversary and look like a statement in front of a partner's mother. Each count's usual reading is in our guide to rose numbers.
Should I bring flowers or something else for my partner's parents?
Both are fine. Flowers suit a host who has a vase and enjoys them. Fruit, a hamper or a potted orchid suit a household that would rather not arrange anything. If you are unsure, pair a small bouquet with fruit so the father is included.
Can you deliver flowers to my parents-in-law outside Bangkok?
Ask us before ordering. We can tell you by chat whether we can reach a given district and province, and what notice the order needs. A fruit basket, a plant or a hamper travels better than cut stems; message us through the contact page with the address area.
What should I write on a card for my partner's mother?
Keep it short and sincere: thank her for having you, wish her a happy birthday or Mother's Day, and say what you appreciate. Write it in English and Thai if you can, have your partner check the Thai, and avoid anything romantic.
