Baby Shower Flowers: Gentle, Low-Scent Choices for a Bangkok Shower
Baby shower flowers that look soft and stay easy to live with: pastel palettes, low-scent picks, table flowers, newborn sets and hospital etiquette.

Most baby shower flowers are chosen for the party and not for the home they end up in. A shower lasts two hours. The arrangement then sits on a kitchen counter, a nursery shelf or a hospital windowsill for a week, next to someone who is tired and possibly sensitive to strong smells.
So this guide picks flowers for a baby shower that pass that test: pastel palettes, why a nursery-friendly bouquet skips lilies and heavy scent, flowers paired with a newborn set, table flowers for a café, condo or hotel suite in Bangkok, what changes after the birth, card wording in English and Thai, and a timing checklist.
Baby shower flowers: pretty, low-scent and easy to live with
Three questions decide whether baby shower flowers are a good choice, and they matter more than colour.
Is it strongly scented? In a condo living room with the air-conditioning on and the windows shut, scent does not disperse the way it does outdoors. Plenty of people, new parents included, do not enjoy that, and you will not find out until the flowers are already in the room.
Does it drop things? Open lilies shed pollen onto clothes and baby blankets, and some flowers drop petals within a day in Bangkok heat.
Can it live on a small surface? Shower tables are crowded with cake, gifts and a guest book. A low, wide arrangement fits. A tall, spiky one gets knocked.
Who is hosting changes the flowers
Traditionally, baby showers were hosted by friends, cousins, aunts or co-workers rather than the parents-to-be, and the Emily Post Institute says anyone may host today for a good reason, such as parents who live far from family. In practice the host supplies the table flowers, and guests bring a baby shower gift that is useful on the day and still welcome the day after.
Pastels that work: white-pink roses, hydrangea and the Signature designs
A pastel bouquet suits a shower because it looks calm in photographs and does not compete with the cake, not because pastels soothe anyone: the one colour study we can point to, a 2021 lab test with 50 participants, actually found the stronger relaxation, cheerfulness and comfort ratings for yellow and red flowers, with white trailing. If your host loves yellow, bring yellow. Otherwise, three families do most of the work in baby shower flower arrangements.
White-pink roses
The white-pink colour is pale at the heart and flushes pink at the edges, which reads as soft rather than sweet. A bouquet of 10 white-pink roses is ฿2,399 and fits beside a guest book. For a longer table, 20 pink roses at ฿3,299 give a fuller shape in a clearly pink shade.
Rose fragrance varies by variety and by how open the flower is; a closed, cool-stored rose smells far less than a full-blown one in a warm room. In a 2014 experiment with 31 male office workers in Tokyo, viewing 30 unscented pink roses for four minutes produced higher high-frequency heart-rate variability and more "comfortable" and "relaxed" ratings than no flowers. That was a small, short test on one group, so it does not prove roses calm a room of new parents. If scent matters to your host, ask us about it when you order by LINE or WhatsApp.
Hydrangea
Hydrangea fills space quietly and has very little scent. The Royal Horticultural Society separates mopheads, with full round heads, from lacecaps, with tiny central flowers ringed by large petals. For table flowers the mophead is the one you want; one or two heads anchor a whole arrangement. Hydrangea wilts fast if the stems dry out, so whoever receives it should put it in water straight away.
The Signature designs
If you would rather not build a palette, the Signature Collection offers hand-tied designs in FlowerRova's matte black wrap with black mesh. The Blush Hour is the one to look at first for soft pink: at the time of writing it is blush lisianthus with cream spray roses, small enough for a kitchen counter. For cream and white, The Quiet Cream pairs cream roses with gypsophila, and The Snow Sprig is white spray chrysanthemum built low and wide, the shape a crowded gift table wants. Stems change with the season, so read each product page for the current flowers and price.
Scent and pollen: why a nursery-friendly bouquet skips lilies
Lilies and cats
Skip lilies for any shower where the parents might have a cat, and plenty of Bangkok condos do. ASPCA Poison Control says true lilies and daylilies can cause severe kidney injury in cats, including from drinking vase water or grooming pollen off their fur. The U.S. FDA's veterinary advice adds that a small amount of leaf, petal, pollen or vase water can be enough. You will not usually know whether there is a cat, so the rule is simple: no lilies.
Roses are listed by the ASPCA as non-toxic to dogs, cats and horses, which is one more reason they are the default. Tulips are different: the ASPCA lists them as toxic to dogs, cats and horses, so leave them out too. For the wider pet question, see our guide to cat-safe flowers, and ask a vet if you have any doubt.
Strong scent
No rule says a baby cannot be near a fresh flower, and this guide does not make one. What is documented is that fragrance bothers a meaningful minority of adults. A representative survey of 1,098 Australian adults found 18.9% reported chemical sensitivity, and 91.5% of those with medically diagnosed multiple chemical sensitivity reported fragrance sensitivity (self-reported, and about fragranced products). A University of Texas Medical Branch summary describes a survey in which close to 30% of people found scented products on others irritating, usually as chemical irritation rather than true allergy.
Neither source is about bouquets, but together they justify a habit: when you do not know the recipient, pick the lower-scent option. That means roses, hydrangea and soft filler, and no tuberose, gardenia or jasmine in the main bouquet.
Pollen
Complete pollen avoidance is unrealistic, according to a 2018 American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology paper, which also notes that insect-pollinated plants generally produce less pollen than wind-pollinated ones. It concerns plants chosen for gardens, so it applies to bouquets only by analogy: roses and hydrangea are insect-pollinated and shed little visible pollen. The NHS hay fever page lists "do not keep fresh flowers in the house" among its self-care tips, so someone with hay fever may not want any flowers in the room. If the mother or a guest has hay fever, ask first, and read our guide to allergy-friendly flowers.
Flowers plus a newborn set: the gift that stays useful
Baby shower flowers on their own are lovely for about a week, and then they are gone. Pairing them with a newborn set means the baby shower gift keeps going after the petals drop, which is why it is the first thing we suggest when someone asks about newborn flowers in Bangkok.
FlowerRova's newborn gifts always include flowers, because every gift on the site does. Two designs to look at first are The First Light with newborn set and The Powder Room with newborn set. The pages list what is in each set and the current price.
Match the set to when it will be opened: at the shower, pick one that looks good unwrapped on a table; after the birth, keep it simple, because tired parents do not want instructions.
For a softer extra, a small plush gift or a box from sweet treats are the easy additions. If a guest or the mother has an allergy, remember that the U.S. FDA lists nine major food allergens, including milk, eggs, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat and soy, so check the ingredients before choosing a mixed box.
Worked example: a guest at a condo shower in Ari
Say you are invited to a colleague's shower, held in the hosts' condo near Ari on a Saturday afternoon. Rather than carry a bouquet on the BTS in April heat, order a newborn set with flowers on Thursday, agree with the host that it can arrive at their unit or the juristic office on Friday, and write a short card. Our guide to sending flowers to a Bangkok condo covers juristic offices, lift access and what to say at reception.
Table flowers for a shower in a café, condo or hotel suite
If you are hosting, the baby shower flowers for the table are your job, and they need to match the venue.
| Venue | What works | What to avoid | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Café table in Thonglor or Ekkamai | Low, wide arrangement; 10 white-pink roses in a short vase | Tall stems that block photographs and conversation | Café tables are small, and the café may already have its own flowers |
| Condo party room or living room in Ari or Sukhumvit | One hydrangea arrangement plus a small rose bouquet | Strongly scented stems; open lilies | Closed rooms hold scent, and a cat may live there |
| Hotel suite in Sathorn or Silom | Two matching low arrangements at each end of the dining table | Anything that needs its water changed mid-event | Hotel teams set up to a timetable and want arrangements ready to place |
Cafés
Ask the café before you order: some allow outside decoration and some do not, and you need to know table size, whether you may use their vases and when you can set up. Have the flowers delivered to the venue, addressed to whoever made the booking. In Thonglor, a low arrangement of white-pink roses looks right against pale wooden tables and a pastel cake.
Condo party rooms and hotel suites
For a condo party room, book through the juristic office, ask when set-up is allowed, and check whether decorations must come through the service lift. For a hotel suite or small ballroom, the banquet team will usually place flowers if you tell them the date, room name, the time you need them in place and a contact on the day. Our guide to hotel flower contracts in Bangkok explains how hotel flower supply works.
Keep the water clean
A Cornell study of vase water found that bacterial diversity in the water and on stems rose over seven days, and that bacterial blockage of the stem harms water balance and flower quality. For a shower that means starting with a clean vase: hot water, soap, a bottle brush and a rinse, as our guide on how to clean a flower vase explains.
For care, the Purdue florist advice says roses stay fresh five to seven days, and recommends topping up water daily and changing it with floral food every two to three days. Our guide to keeping roses fresh in Bangkok heat covers the rest.
Worked example: a café shower in Thonglor
Say Mai is hosting a Sunday-afternoon shower for her sister at a café near Thonglor, with 14 guests. She orders 10 white-pink roses at ฿2,399 for the gift table and 10 pink roses at ฿2,399 to sit near the cake. Before ordering she confirms the café allows outside flowers and asks for two short vases.
She orders on Friday for Sunday delivery, two days ahead. Bouquets of up to 40 roses can go the same day if ordered by 9 pm Bangkok time, but she would rather not rely on it on the day. She asks for delivery to the café "in the afternoon, before the party", gives the café manager's name and tucks one card into each bouquet.
After the birth: hospital rules and the first week at home
Hospital rules
Rules vary, so ask. UK examples show how much. University Hospital Southampton asks visitors not to bring flowers or plants for hygiene reasons, while Hampshire Hospitals states flowers are not permitted. The North Cheshire and Mersey trust adds that flowers and their water can encourage bacteria and mould and take up bedside space. They are UK trusts, but they show a hospital can say no.
In Bangkok, ask the ward or a family member whether flowers are allowed, what size is acceptable and where they may be received. Our guide to sending flowers to a Bangkok hospital lists the questions. If the answer is no, send the flowers to the home for the day the family is back, and send a card to the ward.
The first week at home
Some families keep the first weeks quiet and limit visitors, so a delivery can be kinder than a visit. Ask a relative what they prefer. Flowers for a new mum are welcome rather than a chore when they follow three rules:
- Keep the size modest. Ten to 20 roses fit on most surfaces. Fifty is a gift for a party, not a postnatal bedroom.
- Skip anything that needs trimming or daily care. A new mum does not want a to-do list.
- Send with a hands-off card that says no reply is needed.
Send mid-week, between visits, and not on the day the baby comes home. Keep the flowers in the kitchen or living room, not in the baby's sleeping area and not within reach of an older child. Cats are curious about vase water, which is exactly why we skip lilies.
Worked example: a friend's first week at home in Sathorn
Say your friend gave birth on Monday at a private hospital in Sathorn and came home on Thursday. Her sister tells you on Wednesday that visitors are not welcome yet, but something arriving would be. You choose 20 pink roses at ฿3,299 and add a newborn set so the gift is not only flowers. You order on Friday morning, well before the 9 pm same-day cut-off, ask for delivery to the juristic office with a call to her partner, and write: "Thinking of you all. No need to reply, just rest." The delivery page explains lead times, and our same-day flower delivery guide covers traffic and heat.
When not to send flowers
- The ward has said no. Send a card, and flowers to the home later if the family agrees.
- The mother or a close relative has hay fever, asthma or fragrance sensitivity. Ask first. A meal or a cleaner for a day may help more.
- The pregnancy ended in loss or the birth was difficult. Do not send a "congratulations" bouquet. Send a private message and ask what would help.
- You were not given the address. A shower gift for a colleague is fine; a postnatal delivery to a home address you found yourself is not.
- The family has not announced the birth. Wait until they tell you.
Cards in English and Thai: what to say
A card should say who it is from and one specific thing. The Society of American Florists, a trade association reporting its own consumer research, says a personal card message is what makes the gift. Use these as starting points and change a detail so they sound like you.
At the shower, to the mother-to-be
- "So happy for you both. Can't wait to meet the baby."
- ยินดีด้วยนะ รอเจอน้องอยู่เลย
For a colleague
- "Congratulations to you and your family. We are all thinking of you."
- ขอแสดงความยินดีกับครอบครัวนะ ทุกคนในทีมดีใจด้วย
After the birth, no reply needed
- "Welcome, little one. Please do not reply; just rest."
- ยินดีต้อนรับน้อง ไม่ต้องตอบนะ พักผ่อนเยอะ ๆ
For a friend who is already a parent
- "You've got this. Here are some flowers and a bit of quiet."
- เธอทำได้แน่นอน ส่งดอกไม้มาให้ พักสักนิดนะ
Use the baby's name or gender only if the parents have shared them. The Thai lines are written without ค่ะ or ครับ; add the one you normally use, and ask a Thai friend to read your Thai before it goes out. When you order by chat, tell us the wording and we will include the card.
Budget and timing checklist with price tokens
Baby shower flowers do not need a big budget. One bouquet is the right size for most showers; extra spend is better put into a clean vase or the newborn set.
| Situation | Suggested size | Price | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small gift from a guest | 10 white-pink roses | ฿2,399 | Compact, pale, easy to hand over |
| Table flowers for 10 to 15 guests | 20 pink roses | ฿3,299 | Fuller shape, one clear centrepiece |
| Larger shower, two tables | Two bouquets of 10 | ฿2,399 each | Two small pieces are easier to place than one big one |
| Postnatal home | 10 to 20 roses, or a newborn set | ฿2,399 to ฿3,299 | Modest, easy to place |
For sets, see the newborn gifts page for current prices, or use the build-your-own tool to choose stems yourself.
Timing
- Seven days out: confirm the venue's flower policy, table size and vase supply.
- Four to five days out: decide palette and size, and check the guest list for allergies or a pet at home.
- Two to three days out: order the baby shower flowers. Up to 40 roses can go the same day if ordered by 9 pm Bangkok time, but a shower is not the day to rely on it. For 50 roses the cut-off is 7 pm; 70 and 100 roses need 24 hours' notice.
- The day before: confirm the address and contact. We do not promise an exact arrival time, so ask for "in the afternoon" and leave a buffer.
- Shower day: clean the vase and add flower food. The NC State Extension advises conditioning cut flowers in a cool, dark place for one to two hours before arranging, and says commercial floral preservative works better than home remedies.
Checklist
- Is the main flower low in scent (roses, hydrangea) rather than lily, tuberose or jasmine?
- Is there a cat, or a person with hay fever or fragrance sensitivity, in the house?
- Does the venue allow outside flowers, and who receives them?
- Is the vase clean, and does the card say who it is from?
- After the birth: has the ward or the family said yes?
- Will the parents be able to use the gift after the flowers fade?
For a Thai host, the Cultural Atlas notes that fruit, flowers or cakes are appreciated but not required, and the Emily Post Institute says a bouquet is best brought in a vase or jar when possible.
Frequently asked questions
What are the best baby shower flowers?
White-pink and pink roses and hydrangea are the safest flowers for a baby shower. They have little scent, shed little pollen and look soft in photographs, and the ASPCA lists roses as non-toxic to cats. Start with 10 white-pink roses for a small table, or 20 pink roses for a fuller look.
Are flowers safe around a newborn?
Fresh flowers are not forbidden around a baby. Choose low-scent, low-pollen flowers, keep them out of the baby's sleeping area and change the water often. If the household has allergies, a cat or a sensitivity to fragrance, ask first. For health decisions, ask a doctor.
What flowers should I avoid for a baby shower?
Avoid lilies, because true lilies are toxic to cats. Avoid tulips, which the ASPCA lists as toxic to cats and dogs. Keep heavily scented stems such as tuberose, gardenia and jasmine out of the main bouquet. Skip anything that sheds a lot of pollen or petals onto a table where people hold a baby.
Can I send flowers to the hospital after the birth?
Ask the ward first. Some hospitals do not allow flowers, and rules can differ by ward and by patient. Ask the family, and have a backup plan to send flowers to the home instead. Our guide to sending flowers to a Bangkok hospital lists the questions to ask.
How far ahead should I order flowers for a baby shower?
Order baby shower flowers two to three days ahead, and earlier for a specific design. Bouquets of up to 40 roses can be delivered the same day if ordered by 9 pm Bangkok time, but a shower is better planned than rushed. We do not promise an exact arrival time, so ask for the afternoon and leave a buffer. The delivery page explains the cut-offs.
What should I write on a baby shower flower card?
Keep it short and specific. Say who it is from, name one thing you are looking forward to, and tell the parents there is no need to reply if you are sending after the birth. Avoid guessing the baby's gender or name. English and Thai examples are above. If you want us to include the card, tell us the wording when you order by chat.
