Corporate Flower Gifting in Thailand: Etiquette for Foreign Businesses

Who to send to, what the colours signal, how the card should be worded, and the mistakes that cost foreign companies goodwill.

Flowers are a normal part of Thai business relationships in a way they are not in many countries. They mark openings, promotions, anniversaries, illnesses and bereavements, and their absence is noticed.

For foreign companies operating here, a few conventions are worth getting right.

When Thai businesses send flowers

Grand openings. The most important by far. A row of congratulatory stands outside a new premises is a public record of relationships. Full guide here.

Promotions and appointments. Sending to a counterpart who has been promoted is standard and appreciated.

Company anniversaries. Particularly milestone years.

Illness and hospitalisation. Expected for senior counterparts. Ward rules apply.

Funerals. The most significant of all, and the one where getting it wrong matters most. See พวงหรีด.

Religious and royal occasions, where offices display arrangements.

Who to send to

Send in the company's name, not an individual employee's, unless the relationship is genuinely personal. The card should read as one organisation acknowledging another.

Address it to the most senior relevant person, not to your day-to-day contact. Thai business culture is hierarchical, and a gift addressed to a junior counterpart while ignoring their superior can create an awkwardness for that person. When in doubt, address the senior figure and mention your contact in the message.

Colour, briefly

  • Openings and congratulations: bright, warm — yellow, orange, gold, red, pink. Never predominantly white.
  • Sympathy and funerals: white and cream, with muted purple or pale yellow acceptable. Never red or bright pink.
  • Illness: soft, unscented, low pollen. Modest in size.
  • General goodwill: pink, peach, mixed warm tones are safe everywhere.

The white/funeral association is the one foreigners breach most often, and it is genuinely noticed.

The card

Keep it short and formal. In Thai if possible — we letter cards in Thai script at no charge.

Standard phrases:

  • ขอแสดงความยินดี — congratulations
  • ขอให้กิจการรุ่งเรือง — may your business prosper
  • ด้วยความเคารพอย่างสูง — with the highest respect (funerals)
  • ขอให้หายป่วยเร็ว ๆ — get well soon

Do not attempt an original message in Thai unless someone fluent writes it. The register is formal and a slightly-off translation reads worse than a plain, correct standard phrase.

Sign with the company name, spelled exactly as it should appear publicly.

Mistakes that cost goodwill

Sending white to a celebration. The single most common and most damaging.

Sending nothing at a funeral. Silence at a bereavement is read as a statement about the relationship. This matters more than any positive gesture you could make.

Sending too late for an opening. After the day is worse than not sending.

Undersizing for the relationship. A minimal arrangement from a major partner at a significant event reads as indifference. Match the scale to the relationship.

Individual names on corporate gestures. Confuses who is acknowledging whom.

Assuming Western dates. Thai Mother's Day is 12 August. Thai New Year is mid-April. Diaries built on a Western calendar will miss both.

A note on gifts generally

Flowers are uncomplicated because they are consumable, public, and carry no obligation. That is precisely why they work well in a compliance-sensitive context where a substantial gift might not.

If your company has a gift policy, flowers of moderate value almost always sit comfortably inside it. Check, but this is rarely the problem.

What we do

We handle corporate accounts across Bangkok with Thai-lettered cards, invoiced billing, and advice on scale and colour before you order. If you tell us the relationship and the occasion, we will tell you what is conventional — including when the conventional thing is a fabric wreath rather than flowers, or nothing at all.

Talk to us about a corporate account.

Tell us the occasion. We will do the rest.
