Why Two Bangkok Florists Quote Wildly Different Prices for the Same Bouquet
Stem count, stem grade, sourcing date and wrap all move the price independently. How to read a florist's quote and tell what you are actually buying.
You ask three Bangkok florists for a bouquet of roses and get ฿900, ฿2,200 and ฿4,500. All three are quoting honestly. The difference is in four variables that almost nobody itemises.
1. Stem count
The largest single factor, and the one most often left vague. "A bouquet of roses" can be nine stems or thirty. A ฿900 bouquet is usually 8–10 stems; a ฿2,200 bouquet is usually 20–25.
When you compare quotes, the first question is always how many stems. If a florist will not tell you, that is itself informative. Every price on our rose collection states the stem count, because a price without a count is not a price.
2. Stem grade
Roses are graded, principally by stem length and head size. A 40 cm Thai-grown rose and a 70 cm imported one are the same flower in the way that two cars are both cars.
Grade is where most of the invisible price difference lives. Short-stem roses cost roughly a third of long-stem, and in a wrapped bouquet a customer often cannot tell until day three, when the shorter, younger-cut stems blow open and drop.
3. When the flowers were bought
Bangkok wholesale runs on a daily cycle. Flowers bought this morning cost more than flowers bought Tuesday and held in a cooler.
Cold-stored roses are not bad — good storage is legitimate and every florist does some of it. But a bouquet cut four days ago has four days less life in your vase, and it is priced accordingly at wholesale even when it is not priced accordingly at retail.
This is the gap that stings. A ฿900 bouquet of 10 long-stem roses is almost always older stock.
4. Wrap, labour and delivery
Hand-tying twenty-five stems into a spiral takes a trained florist fifteen to twenty minutes. Bundling them and taping paper around it takes three. Both get called "a bouquet."
Delivery is frequently hidden. A ฿1,200 bouquet with ฿250 delivery is a ฿1,450 bouquet. We charge ฿120 and nothing over ฿1,500, and we say so on the delivery page rather than at checkout.
How to compare quotes properly
Ask every florist the same three questions:
- How many stems?
- Cut when, and sourced from where?
- What is the delivery charge?
Three answers, three comparable numbers. Most price mysteries dissolve immediately.
What "expensive" should buy you
A higher price is only worth paying if it buys stem count, stem grade, freshness or skill. It is not worth paying for a heavier box, a bigger ribbon, or a brand.
If a florist cannot tell you where this morning's roses came from, you are paying for the packaging.
