Thai Mother's Day on 12 August: Why Jasmine, and What Else Works

The meaning behind มะลิ, what Thai families actually give, when to order, and how to get it right if you did not grow up with the tradition.

Thai Mother's Day falls on 12 August, the birthday of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother. It is not the same date as Mother's Day almost anywhere else, and if you are new to Thailand this is the single most common gifting mistake foreigners make here.

Why jasmine

The flower of the day is jasmine — มะลิ. The association is specific: jasmine is white, which carries purity; it is fragrant without being heavy; and it flowers year-round, which reads as constancy.

Traditionally a child gives their mother a phuang malai (พวงมาลัย) — a garland of jasmine buds strung with other flowers — often kneeling, often with a wai. The gesture matters more than the object. In many families the garland is placed in the mother's hands rather than around her neck.

You will see jasmine garlands sold at every intersection in Bangkok in the days before the 12th, from ฿20 upwards. They are genuinely lovely and genuinely cheap.

What to give if you want to do more

A garland alone is completely correct and needs no supplement. But many families now pair it with a bouquet, and if you are sending rather than giving in person, a bouquet travels better than a garland does.

What works:

  • White and cream flowers. The colour association with the day is white. Cream and blush roses read correctly and photograph beautifully.
  • A jasmine garland alongside. We tie fresh jasmine garlands the same morning and send them with the bouquet. This is the combination most Thai customers order.
  • Anything she actually likes. Tradition is a floor, not a ceiling. Plenty of Thai mothers would rather have the roses.

What to avoid:

  • Pure white arrangements with no other colour, if the recipient is elderly and traditional — in some contexts that reads funerary. Adding cream, blush or a garland resolves it entirely.
  • Yellow as the dominant colour, which is associated with the King's birthday rather than the Queen Mother's.

Order before the 10th

Jasmine supply is the constraint. Pak Khlong Talat runs out. The 11th and 12th of August are our second busiest days of the year after Valentine's, and the market sells through before we stop wanting to buy.

We build jasmine into arrangements through that week alongside roses, but we cap the number and stop when the supply does.

If you are not Thai and want to get it right

Two things carry almost all the weight. Get the date right — 12 August, not the second Sunday in May. And give it in person if you can, because the gesture is the gift. If you cannot, a card written by hand in Thai says more than an expensive bouquet with a printed English label. We write cards in Thai script at no charge; just tell us what to say.

告诉我们场合,剩下的交给我们。
