Songkran and Flower Delivery: What Closes, and How to Plan Around It

Songkran, 13–15 April, is the largest holiday in the Thai calendar, and for anything involving fresh produce and road transport it is the most disrupted week of the year. If you need flowers delivered in mid-April, plan differently.

What actually closes

Pak Khlong Talat does not fully close, but it thins dramatically. Many wholesalers travel home to the provinces for the week — Songkran is when Bangkok empties — and the trucks from Chiang Mai run reduced schedules. Stock is narrower and prices are higher for what remains.

Courier capacity collapses. Riders go home too. The messenger and bike-courier networks most Bangkok florists rely on run at a fraction of normal capacity from roughly the 12th to the 16th.

Roads close. Silom, Khao San, RCA and parts of Sukhumvit shut for water-play. A delivery address inside a closed zone may be genuinely unreachable by vehicle on the 13th and 14th.

Many florists simply shut. Small studios close for the full week.

What this means practically

Order before the 10th for anything landing in the holiday window. By the 11th, choice is limited to whatever is in the cooler.

Expect a narrower palette. Roses are usually available; the supporting flowers — ranunculus, imported stems, anything delicate — often are not. This is a good week for florist's choice, since rigid designs cannot be honoured.

Avoid the 13th and 14th entirely if you can. Deliver on the 11th or 12th instead, or from the 16th. A bouquet arriving two days early is a far better outcome than one that cannot reach the door.

Water is a real hazard. A bouquet on the back of a motorcycle through a Songkran street will be soaked, and so will the recipient collecting it. Wrapped paper does not survive a bucket of water. Where deliveries must happen, we route around play zones and use a car, which costs more and takes longer.

What we do

We stay open through Songkran with reduced hours and a reduced range, because hotels and hospitals do not stop. What we change:

• We buy heavier before the 12th and hold in the cooler, and we say so — this is one week where "cut this morning" is not always true, and we would rather tell you than pretend
• We cap daily order volume to what we can actually deliver
• We refuse addresses inside closed zones on the 13th–14th rather than accepting the order and failing

The upside

Flowers are a genuinely good Songkran gift. The holiday is about renewal and about paying respect to elders — rot nam dam hua (รดน้ำดำหัว), where younger family members pour scented water over the hands of their elders and ask for blessing.

Jasmine and marigold feature heavily. A bouquet delivered to a grandparent on the 11th or 12th, ahead of the family gathering, lands very well.
