Preserved and Dried Flowers in Bangkok Humidity: What Survives

Preserved roses — sold as "eternal roses" or "infinity roses," usually in a box — are marketed on a promise of one to three years. That promise was written for a temperate climate. Bangkok is not one.

Here is what genuinely happens to preserved and dried flowers in 70–85% relative humidity.

What "preserved" actually means

A preserved rose is a real flower whose natural sap has been replaced with a glycerin-based solution, usually with dye. It is not dried and not artificial. The glycerin keeps the petals soft and flexible.

That flexibility is the selling point and also the vulnerability: glycerin is hygroscopic. It attracts and holds water from the air.

In a dry room, this is what keeps the petals supple for years. In Bangkok, the glycerin keeps pulling moisture from humid air until the petals become damp, heavy and sticky to the touch — and then they discolour, and mould becomes possible.

Realistic lifespans here

In a well air-conditioned, consistently dry room: 12–24 months is achievable. Aircon dehumidifies, and that is what saves them.

In a room with aircon used only at night: 6–12 months. The daily humidity cycling is harder on them than steady humidity.

In a non-air-conditioned room: 3–6 months before noticeable degradation. Sometimes much less in the rainy season.

In a glass dome or sealed box: significantly better, because you are controlling the microclimate. This is why they are sold in boxes, and it is a real functional benefit rather than only packaging.

Dried flowers are different, and mostly better here

Dried flowers — bunny tails, pampas, statice, preserved eucalyptus, dried roses — contain no glycerin and no residual moisture. They are more brittle and less vivid than preserved flowers, and they hold up considerably better in humidity.

Their failure mode is different: they absorb ambient moisture, go limp rather than crisp, and become prone to mould in genuinely damp conditions. But they tolerate Bangkok much better than glycerin-preserved stems do.

Pampas grass and dried palm in particular do well here and have become popular for exactly that reason.

How to make either last

Air conditioning is the whole game. Not for temperature — for dehumidification. A preserved arrangement in a bedroom with nightly aircon will outlast the same arrangement in a naturally ventilated living room by a factor of three.

Keep them out of direct sun. UV fades dye rapidly, and preserved flowers are dyed. A window-facing arrangement loses colour in weeks.

Never touch them with wet hands, and never dust with a damp cloth. Use a soft brush or a hairdryer on cool, low.

Do not put them in a bathroom. This should be obvious and it is the most common placement mistake.

Consider a dome or case. With a silica gel sachet inside, changed every few months, a domed preserved arrangement can genuinely last years here.

Are they worth it?

If you want a lasting object, yes — with the caveat that "lasting" in Bangkok means one to two years in a dry room, not the three years on the box.

If you want flowers, no. Preserved roses do not smell, do not change, and do not have the specific quality of being temporary that makes fresh flowers worth sending. They are a decorative object that resembles a flower.
