Sending Flowers to a Bangkok Hospital: What Wards Actually Allow

Scent, pollen and ward rules — what gets refused at the door, what is always accepted, and what to send instead when flowers are not allowed at all.

Flowers get turned away at Bangkok hospital doors more often than people realise, and the reasons are consistent enough to plan around.

What gets refused

Strong scent. This is the most common refusal. Lilies, tuberose, heavily scented garden roses and jasmine are frequently declined on wards where patients are nauseated, recovering from surgery, or sharing a room. In oncology and post-operative wards, a refusal is close to certain.

High pollen. Lilies again — the stamens shed heavily, they stain, and the pollen irritates. Some hospitals will accept lilies if the stamens are removed; many will not risk it.

Anything in soil. Potted plants are refused in most Thai hospitals on infection-control grounds. This surprises people, because a plant seems more durable than cut flowers.

Intensive care, always. No ward we know of in Bangkok permits flowers in ICU. Send to the family instead, or to the room the patient will move to.

What is reliably accepted

Unscented, low-pollen, modest in size. Roses are ideal — they carry little scent in the varieties sold here, shed almost nothing, and read as a proper gift.

Our White Room exists for exactly this: white ranunculus, stock and structural olive, built unscented and low-pollen by default. It is the arrangement we send to wards, and it gets through the door.

Two practical points:

  • Send small. Hospital bedside tables are tiny and shared. A twenty-stem bouquet is generous; a forty-stem is a burden the nurse has to solve.
  • Include a vase or ask us to. Wards rarely have spare vessels, and a bouquet with nowhere to go ends up in a sink.

Hospital-specific notes

Bangkok's large private hospitals — Bumrungrad, Samitivej, BNH, Bangkok Hospital — all accept deliveries at a central reception and route them internally. Give us the patient's full name and the ward or room number. Without a room number, delivery depends on the hospital being willing to look the patient up, and privacy policies mean they often will not.

Government hospitals vary far more. Some have no delivery handling at all, and the courier must hand to a family member. If you know someone visiting, sending to them directly is more reliable.

When flowers are the wrong gift

Sometimes they are. If the ward refuses them, or the patient has allergies, or they are being discharged in two days and will have to carry everything home, flowers create a problem.

The Thai alternative is a fruit basket (กระเช้าผลไม้), which is the standard hospital-visit gift here and is accepted essentially everywhere. We pair them with the White Room, or send them alone.

The other option nobody thinks of: send flowers to their home, timed for the day they are discharged. Arriving to a bright flat after a hospital stay is worth more than a bouquet on a ward trolley.

Tell us the hospital and ward and we will tell you what will get through.

Назовите повод. Остальное — наша забота.
